It must be the season.

I have heard from John Bolton, ex Greenie in Adelaide, that Kevin "Rock" Hudson (ex CPOETS [WE]) crossed the bar over the weekend.

Farewell Rock!

Totally agree with your comments Bob. I managed to have a quiet chat with Tim about 10 years ago at an All Ships Reunion. A tough but fair man, with a reputation he didn't have to prove!

Here are some career points from his service records, up until 1970.

Timothy Collins, R28178. Joined the RAN on 16/6/46.

Major ships - Bataan x 2, Australia, Barcoo, Warrego x 2, Yarra, Perth, Vendetta. I don't have any info after 1970, except I was summoned to his office in HMAS Sydney in 73!

War Service:

Korea - Bataan (52)

Vietnam - Gun Line Tour in Vendetta (69/70) and also one escort trip into Vung Tau (Nov 70).

There were also lots of shore postings, but of interest to this site, he did time at Nirimba as MAA 67/68.

You helped make the RAN proud.

RIP Tim :salute1:

Tug Wilson, a commanding Commander.

From AB Writer to Commander, Tug will be well remembered as the scribe who collated and wrote up “Skilled Hands at Sea”, the story of Australian Naval Apprentices. That work was done in his own time assisted by family and friends, and much of the work had to be undertaken by deciphering hand written records from NIRIMBA’s early days. A marvellous job well done and of which he was most proud. I was fortunate enough to have him present a signed copy to me not long before he retired from the RAN.

The remarkable “Wilson” work ethic transferred to his son David who became the Warrant Officer of the Navy 1999 – 2002, and Tug was one very proud father. Two remarkable men.

Thank you Tug

=; Tonight's News we learned that Tim Fischer has crossed the bar, aged 73... [-o<

The following was recently published in the Townsville Bulletin

Image

Tim Fischer on course for his biggest victory

Image

FORMER national serviceman and deputy prime minister Tim Fischer has been reported as being “gravely ill” in Albury hospital.

Elected to the NSW parliament in 1971, aged 24 and soon after his return from Vietnam, he then served in Federal Parliament from 1984 until 2001.

He was trade minister then Nationals leader between 1990 and 1999.

Later he became the first resident ambassador to the Vatican.

Mr Fischer, who as a 1RAR platoon commander fought in the Battle of Coral in Vietnam in May 1968, has made no secret of his decade-long battle with various cancers.

His latest, possibly terminal battle is with acute myeloid leukaemia.

He has previously battled bladder and prostate cancers and melanoma.

He would not object to being described as a tough old coot, whose other passions included railways of the world and General Sir John Monash, who’s posthumous promotion to field marshal he has championed.

Tim Fischer claimed he was exposed in Vietnam to the defoliant Agent Orange, as were many of his mates.

Defoliation was a tactic first employed by British forces in the Malayan Emergency.

Agent Orange, used by the US and allies in Vietnam as a defoliant to deny cover and food to their enemy, was an equal mixture of the chemicals 2,4,5-T and 2,4-D in which dioxins were major components, mixed with diesel or kerosene to aid delivery.

Both chemicals were also commonly used in Australian agriculture.

But the long-term effects of their widespread use in Vietnam has led to claims of adverse consequences by exposed veterans.

Residual dioxin enters the food chain and is easily absorbed by humans through physical contact or ingestion.

Some estimates suggest 76 million litres of Agent Orange were sprayed over Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. RAAF Iroquois helicopters were also equipped with boom sprays to deliver Agent Orange, so named for the orange band on the 210 litre drums in which it was delivered from the US.

Concerns about the use of chemical sprays and their effect on people soon emerged in Australia and elsewhere.

Veterans began reporting high incidences of various cancers, while abnormalities in their post-Vietnam offspring were also attributed to Agent Orange.

The Australian Government through DVA initially denied any links, despite a royal commission which, in a nine-volume report, admitted the existence of health problems, but found no causal link to the use of defoliants in Vietnam.

Instead it suggested exposure to a range of chemicals, which it claimed veterans generically described as “Agent Orange” may have contributed.

Last year Tim Fischer attributed his various cancers to his exposure to Agent Orange.

“At least one specialist suggested my immunity broke down a lot more quickly as a direct consequence,” he said.

He may have unsuccessfully argued similarly as a Vietnam veteran while holding senior government office.

However it would be now hard for heartless bureaucrats to argue he didn’t know what he was talking about, when his own personal health circumstances suggest otherwise.

It may result in his most successful posthumous victory.

I didn't always agree with some of his ideas, but he did stick to his guns.

He was committed to helping others and his country.

RIP Tim :salute1:
