It is with great sadness that Judy, loved wife of Sig. Bruhn, passed away on Thursday night (7th Sept). She will be buried tomorrow in Maitland area. Judy became a friend in 1982 when we were in the US picking up Sydney and remained so till the end of her short illness. A wonderful wife and mother, and friend to all who met her. Sadly missed.

Very sad to relay the news that the eldest son of my good mate Bob Sykes (ex-Mech, grunter and submariner) died last weekend of a heart attack. Was only 38 years old.

Very sad when kids pre-decease their parents.

Rest in peace David.

In the latest issue of Australian Warship/The White Ensign, in the Lest We Forget section is a note that P. Hattenfels has passed away on the NSW Central Coast on the 30th October 2007.

I served with Chief Stoker Peter Hattenfels on the Stalwart in the early 70's. As there can't be too many people around with that name who would appear in an ex-navy magazine, I would assume it was Peter.

I remember Peter as a big bloke with the strength of his convictions who was laid low for a time on Stalwart with a rather severe operation that left him with a scar the length of his abdomen.

Fair skies and a following sea wherever you go Peter.

I also served with Pete on the Stalwart.
What a funny, down to earth bloke he was. (Often called Peter Hattencoat)
Looked after his troops, often running interference for us against the wallies in the Combined Tech Office.
Rest easy Pete. :salute:

I received this e-mail today, I didn't know Barry but I guess some of our members did.

It is with regret we note the passing of HMAS Hobart Association member, John Barry Eldershaw of Blacktown on Sunday 6th June 2008.

Many a Mobi will remember Barry who worked at Blacktown station, helping them stay safe and making sure they to onto buses etc to Nirimba,
after runs ashore.

He was badly beaten up several years ago by local hoons at Blacktown station.

His funeral service will be held in the
West Chapel of Pinegrove Crematorium,
Great Western Highway, Minchinbury NSW

Wednesday, April 9th 2008 commencing at 1030.

Guardian Funerals Minchinbury 9625-8500

It was sad enough hearing that Bob Sykes' son David had died 4 years ago, but I was more saddened to hear that Bob Sykes died today, apparently while rowing (one of our friends Kev Murphy was always of the view that you're only given so many heart beats so don't use them up early by exercising........maybe Bob should have listened to him....).

Bob recruited me to ASC and was my first boss here as well as a good mate. We'd been friends since doing an SGCE course together (well.....we did do a bit of study amongst the drinking and other social activities) in Leeuwin in 1976, along with some other reprobates like Bazza Davis and Mick Bowden.

We kept in touch after he left ASC, but much to my regret I haven't caught up with him for several years. A sobering reminder to make the effort keep in touch with our old mates as often as we can, as you never know when the opportunity will disappear.

Fair winds and smooth seas buddy; the world's a less interesting place without you in it. :tear:

Yes...I knew Bob. So sad to hear of his passing. I informed Dave Maxwell and he said that he feels very vulnerable as a few of his mates have passed on.
Quite correct Tafmo...... make the effort to see old buddies and don't hold any grudges either.

Sad news indeed. Bob and I did the SD course together and leaves many good memories. Condolences to Margaret and her immediate family.
