It seems that there may be a major change of players in the marine side of defence contractors. Austal, a company quite famous (some have described them as infamous) on the Australian and also some parts of the western world is now the subject of a hostile takeover initiated in the USA. And it looks like succeeding. News from the Cairns waterfront is that their Australian division is performing poorly (yeah, that's news!), and is to be sold off with the Cairns operation number 1 on the list. Their Cairns operation is centred on the old NQEA slip, drydock and now a large travelift setup. Of course, other marine operators who have done/are doing work for them are very nervous about getting paid.......... Interesting times ahead for Cairns, with the marine precinct being funded and the plan for a 5,000 tonne syncrolift also receiving moneys.
