Hi Shipmates,

Unfortunately I have the sad duty to advise that Brian passed away
yesterday at Governor Phillip Nursing home where he had been placed on
Monday... His daughter had been trying to contact Irish, but passed the
message to Brian Hopkins who let me know.

His private funeral under restrictions is scheduled for Monday 9 August
2021 at Pine Grove, but is planned to be live-streamed, and I shall pass
on the details when received...

In these terrible times of lockdown we need to keep in touch....

Regards

I served with Wiggy when he was a Kellick Stoker in Sydney and Swan. From my memory, he was always a quiet bloke who would never offend anyone.

His Vietnam Service consisted of 6 x Trips in Vaug Tau Ferry from 60 - 71.

Here is a photo of Wiggy remotely steam the boilers from Swan's MCR in 1974 or 75.

RIP Brian, your watch is done :salute1:

Because of restrictions, just a small group of family, friends and reps from Naval Assoc and RSL were in attendence. But, there was still some very loving and funny stories told about their lives and experiences with Wiggy.

The stories from Brian's children, said they did not know much about his naval life, just learning from some stories from other veterans. But, when you hear them talk about their own experiences, their lives have been shaped as a result of Wiggy's naval career.

The NAA and RSL did their tributes and Poppy Ceremony at the end.

Once again, only a small number of family and friends were allowed at Irish's funeral.

Image

This is Frank Syaranamual, Sec or the local NAA. Irish was a surviver of the Voyager/Melb collision. Irish was in Voyager and Frank was in Melboure at the time. Frank's brother was also in Voyager as a young seaman, but he did not survive. Consequently, they had been mates for a very long time.

Image

Tributes certainly showed that he lived a full and active life. Irish communicated with all ages and would help anyone, from the very young to the very old.

More sad news to post I’m afraid.

For those who knew Gary, he was a normal adult entry into the RAN and specialised as an ETP. I came to know him at the Naval Communication Station HAROLD E HOLT where he worked for many years, 1st as a Warrant Officer and 2nd as a Civvie techo. At that time I was involved in the Boeing Brown & Root consortium providing operations, maintenance and support to HEH. Gary was a good operator and a fine representative for Navy.

VALE - RADM NRB BERLYN AO RAN RTD

Image

It is another sad day as I have been informed as follows:

On another sad note I was informed at sailing last night that Nigel Berlyn Rear ADM Rtd passed away on Thursday at age 86. I am waiting on an email from the office on funeral details. He was a long term member at RANSA and sailed regularly in RANSA and other clubs racing series. He owned Reverie until about 3 years ago.

Regards and Stay Safe,

Dave Giddings

I first met Nigel when I was in my Passing Out Year from NIRIMBA. At the time Nigel was an RN Lieutenant on exchange duties however he had married Jan, and Australian, and it was not long before he transferred to the RAN. Later we served together in HMAS MELBOURNE, he as the MEO and me as an engineering watchkeeping officer. He lived in Manly and I in Fairlight and we often travelled to and from work together. It was not unusual for us too walk from Garden Island Dockyard to Circular Quay via Sydney’s Botanical Gardens and, on more than one occasion we were caught out by failing to make the main gates of the Gardens by closing time with the only way out was by climbing over the locked gates. Interesting days!! Later I attended a number of meetings with Nigel in his position as General Manager of GID and later at the occasional engineering or supply symposium. A gentleman and a professional engineer officer of the highest order.
