Hi guys, I would like to talk about our site going forward.

As you are probably aware the guy that we were hosting the site with has decided that we are not earning enough money for him so he informed us that we have to find another hosting company. This has turned out to be an absolute bonus for us as we have been paying $350 for hosting each year and $30 for our domain name and not getting very much assistance.

It just so happens that my new next door neighbour, Josh, is a computer genius who works at Albatross. I discussed our plight with him and he agreed to help find us a new host at a reasonable price. He managed to find a hosting company in Singapore and has changed the site over for a phenomenal saving.

I paid $270 for the new hosting to June 2026 and our domain name to October 2024. As you can see, that is just a tad better that $380 per year. We had a carry - over from last year’s donations of $250 so that almost covered the outlay.

As an aside, our phpBB forum is years out of date, but we have been persisting with it because we don’t know how to upgrade it without possibly losing all our data and it is working ok. I spoke to Josh and he said that we could continue with the old version but there is a high risk of being hacked because the older versions don’t have the same protection as the new version. We were hacked many years ago and the whole forum was obliterated.

He backed up the old version and created a new site for one year with the new version, which looks very different from our site. He has agreed to help me add all our bells and whistles to the new phpBB version over the next few months so it looks similar and when we are happy will transfer the data base and the new version to our site.

This will take some time and we can use our old site as normal in the interim. I would also like to give him some dollars for his time and expertise so I might ask for a bit of financial help further down the track.

All in all a very good outcome. :wav:
