Post subject:  The Inaugural RAN Skilled Hands ADELAIDE (New Year) Smokey

The Hippy Chippy is heading north for few days over Christmas, then south to Adelaide for e few days for New Years Eve, staying in the city, and as this is the FIRST occasion I've had the opportunity to re-visit my 'home port' since leaving for Sydney 4 years ago, I'd love to catch up with as many of our South Australian Members as is possible/ practical while I'm over there...

With this in mind I'd like to announce The Inaugural RAN Skilled Hands Adelaide (New Year) Smokey on Sunday 2nd of January 2005, at whichever venue suits the most attendees... (input welcome)

So far, there's...

Oh crap! :drinkers: :drinkers: :drinkers: :drinkers: :partyman: :partyman: :partyman: Having probably not recovered from New Year's Eve celebrations :puke: :puke: :puke: :-& :-& :drunken: , and then it's back to work on the 3rd. :vom: :vom:

Be still my cringing liver! :prayer: :prayer: :prayer:

Put me down as a probable Rick, just need to firm up the work schedule and maybe take an extra day or two's leave.

As far as venue is concerned, the 108 in Hindly Street sounds good. ................no, that should probably be towards the end of the night.
Being almost a teetotaler :upy: , I'm not familiar with many watering holes in the city. Usually find myself on the doorstep of the the churches on the opposite corners (an Adelaide thing). :angel12: Thank Christ they've managed to convert a lot of them to boozers :partyman: :drinkers: :partyman: :drinkers: :supz: , but I still haven't been able to bring myself to enter one in case it falls down and they blame me. :blob6: :laughing5: :laughing3:

Given the lack of a good public transport service in the suburbs, I'd suggest somewhere there's public transport access, plenty of pubs and near the city, eg CBD (pick a pub) Glenelg (maybe the Grand, moving to the Plaza, to Holdfast Shore bars), North Adelaide (maybe the Old Lion?, progressing to the Oxford etc). :drinkers: :drinkers: :drinkers: :drinkers: :drinkers: :drinkers:

I might sign up for the AA meetings now. :butthead: :snakeman:

Looks like I'll be too late for this one. Am visiting Adelaide for 2 weeks at the beginning of March. Ah well, maybe one day I'll catch up with some SA skilled hands.

My favourite 'local' watering hole was the Earl of Aberdeen, which I'm sure I'll get to during my stay, right next door to the units housing the Submariners, but no beer garden... :-k

Alternatively, The Old Lion (now The Lion,) sounds OK, but the Grand (Glenelg) is probably a good place to avoid around the The New Year. :axe:

Quite like the Newport Arms, but probably a transport concern for some... :partyman:

There are 30-plus Members registered in SA, I'll e-mail them all in the next few days to bolster numbers and canvas suggestions, but I'd be EXTREMELY dissapointed if at least you and Berky didn't front up Tafmo... [-X

Sorry; lapsed back to the days I used to sell newspapers outside the place (not that long ago of course). #-o

Well, with Rick ensconced in an Adelaide hotel that doesn't have Internet access (or he just hasn't found the Business Centre yet), I'm acting Webmaster for a few minutes :supz: ........now where's Stretch's account :-k :-k :-k ........

Rick wants to advise a change to the venue (late notice I know, but there hasn't been a huge response from SA members..............I know Ned, it's because I'm going [-X [-X ......., so it will now be closer to the beach).

New venue is the Cafe Buono at the North Haven Marina - great food and very attractive staff. So if any of you SA members (or others holidaying in Adelaide) change your mind, you'll find us there from about 1215 today. :drinkers: :drinkers: :drinkers: :partyman: :partyman: :partyman:

Hope to see some of you there.

Well you lazy bastards who couldn't make it missed an enjoyable afternoon (photographic evidence to follow), and some great food (to say nothing of cute waitresses). Then weather was wonderful, and the company was scintillating (I was there). :finga:

Rick had some friends turn up to pad out the numbers, and we had a most enjoyable afternoon. Found out the world is indeed an extremely small place (not small enough yet to require a Thai maid to live in our house, but I live in hope). :prayer: :prayer:

Rick is currently the walking wounded, but I’ll let him explain that one. Just goes to show – SH*T HAPPENS! #-o #-o #-o

I can't wait to hear the explanation for this. Of course, I would not be surprised if there were differing accounts form Rick and someone else. I just want to know how we will know if any account is the true one, what with you all making the attempt to drink SA dry :partyman: :drinkers: :drinkers: :partyman: :partyman:

One of these days I will have to find the money to fly to Oz to participate in one of the runs.

Well here I am at last, yes, the 'walking wounded' (just barely) but I can't blame Tafmo for that...

I guess the opportunity that presented itself for me to visit S.A. was badly timed, and a number of circumstances meant that we didn't maximise on the numbers, nor connect with all that we should have...

I'd already received appologies from Vic Merryweather and Bob McMillan, who couldn't make it due to family committments, then a last minute change of venue (as a result of my diminished capacity to move,) didn't help matters either, as I've since received an e-mail from Dave Mortimer, who, acting on the e-mail I sent to all S.A. Members, drove up from Millicent, rounded up two other 'Greenies', Rob Stanton and Bob Walker and headed to 'The Lion'...

Tafmo posted the change of venue onto the website for me, but too late to catch Dave, Bob and Rob... I do appologise for the lack of communications guys, I promise to be better organised next time...

Regrettably, following an 'altercation' on New Year's Eve with (of all people) a beligerant US Sailor, I'd broken a couple of ribs that had me on my back unable to move ALL New Year's Day, and as I was staying at 'The Lakes Resort' in Westlakes, I was forced to find a venue 'closer to home' to host The Inaugural RAN Skilled Hands ADELAIDE New Year Smokey...

Full details on 'the incident' here: http://www.ran-skilledhands.org/forum/v ... 5943#15943

On Tafmo's excellent suggestion, after he picked me up from 'The Lakes' in his new 'chariot', (very nice for a Holden Bob,) we headed off to Cafe Bouno in North Haven for lunch, (via a quick sneak peak at SubCorp, from the outside of course,) and follow up drinks at 'The Sail Masters Tavern' overlooking the beautiful North Haven Marina for post lunch convivials...

At 'kick-off' time, Tafmo and I were the only 'starters', so we decided to make it more social by including some of my really great friends from Adelaide...

Never too sick to enjoy a quiet drink or two...!

A really great day with lovely friends to be remembered...!

I believe Tafmo may have one or two photos to add to the collection as well...!

Rick,
Are you sure you're not getting too old for all this socialising. First you had your trip to sick bay before the Sydney run which was a 'gut buster', then off to Brisbane for a 'rib tickler', then have all the tiffies in Adelaide running round looking after the 'sick puppy'.
Anyway, hope the R&R works well so that we can plan the 2005 social calander.
Take care,
Pussa.
