Colloquially known as Pincher (and to some as Black Pincher), John martin was a well known and well liked individual. A professional at work, and a bit of a larrikin at play, he will be remembered by many. Lari O'Neill says; It is with much sadness I have to report the loss of John (Pincher ) Martin . John passed away this morning in Brisbane after a short illness.. John and I joined in Brisbane on the 8 July 1960 and enjoyed a close friendship from then on. He was best man at my first wedding. Although we only served together on the same ship once after Nirimba we could always catch up as if we had never been apart and carryon as best friends. Jim Corby and I had gone down to visit him at home the Sunday before last. We had aphotograph taken to replicate one we have from first term in 1960. Johns daughters are handling the funeral service arrangements and I will advise when known. I thougyt you could put this out on your MOBI network Bob as you do such a great job of keeping us all informed. Best regards, Lari O'Neill RIP Pincher Bob Mummery John's Vietnam Service consisted of: 2 x Escort Trips to Vung Tau in HMAS Yarra in 1966
1 x Vung Tau Trip in HMAS Sydney in 1969.Another MOBI from those early days, and from of the "Black Gang", gone too soon. RIP John, your watch in done.

Sad news on "Pincher". I never served with him, other than at Nirimba, but he was one who stood out as a senior apprentice to me, when I was a sprog. Tough man on the rugby field but a real nice guy off of it. Vale John, RIP fair winds and following seas. Condolences to his family.

Whilst I didn't have reason to interact with John while we were both serving at HMAS Nirimba, I remember him as a gentleman deserving of respect. Always sad to learn of another fellow MOBI crossing the bar. VALE John 'Pincher' Martin, rest on your oars, your journey's done... R.I.P.

Another MOBI gone too early, a good bloke who loved a joke, a nuggety half back who played rugby hard, onya Pincher.
