G'day All,
ALBERT IAN "POLLY" POLLARD R54418 CERA - 29/11/1937 - 15/5/2015 ASBESTOSIS
Another of the black gang gone.
Regards
Kerry Kerr
A sad day indeed. Ian was a great guy. He actually made Warrant Officer and assisted me for a few weeks at the Naval Communication Station, Harold E Holt in Exmouth during the USN/RAN joint manning early days. We had a bunch of USN CBs (Construction Battalion sailors also known as CEEBEEs) who had only a rough idea of operating a Central Mechanical Plant. Ian introduced the tried and true method of chasing systems and recording those systems in sketch books, just the same as we as ‘Tiffies” had to do in our formative years.
For the younger gentry, CERA was the abbreviation/acronym for Chief Engine Room Artificer or Chief Tiff.
RIP Ian
Yours aye
Bob Mummery

Polly gone, eh? He was the Chief Tiff in Warship Kimbla and Doug Jenkins used to really get to him. When he left Navy Office to go to Kimbla, he arranged for me to go with him....... bugger him!! Cranky old bugger, but a nice guy under it all!! He used to take over the galley in Kimbla and cook up lunch and dinner. One of his favourites was "mock fish"!!!! Fair winds, following seas and a safe port Polly.

I remember Polly from Kimbla when she used to berth at Waterhen.
Your right PW, a cranky old so and so but underneath a nice bloke!
He was a brilliant CERA!
RIP Polly.

VALE - COMMANDER (SHIPWRIGHT) RAY SPEIGHT
Dear All,
Unfortunate news received from John Simmons via Dave Harnett today.
Ray Speight, former Shipwright and Shipwright Officer was a professional and well liked officer who always had the welfare of his men and the Navy (in that order) at heart.
Ray’s funeral details will be advised when they come to hand.
Yours aye
Bob Mummery

A straight arrow. He help me when we did the final docking survey on Melbourne. Couldn't have been more honest with what we were seeing and backed up my assessment to FHQ. RIP Sir smooth seas ahead.

I put all my successes in the navy and beyond down to the support and faith in me that Ray demonstrated in my early years as a SDSH. I and two of my contemparies were the first in country trained SDSH officers, what that really means is that the RAN left us three to get on with the job without any guidance. Ray rallied and went out of his way to ensure we succecced when no one else was interested. I had never met Ray prior to that time but I will never forget the support that man gave me. Vale Ray, you are a champion.
