I have seen a notice on FB about the recent death of Cmdr Ashley Greedy.
He was a bandy not that we will hold that against him
I knew him from Lonsdale before he became a band officer. A really nice guy and talented muso.
He rose from a junior musician to the rank of Commander. Not a bad rise in rank. He was the director of Music for the RAN before he retired.
He was the conductor and quite instrumental (no pun intended) in the organisation of the music for the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Not a bad feather to stick in ones hat.
He died on Norfolk Island to where he had retired after retiring from the RAN of a heart attack.
RIP Asley.

Is this the Squizzy Taylor who spent some time in HMAS Sydney on the Vung Tau runs? Wiry chap. Bit of a hippy. If so, I spotted him once in Darwin near my shipyard, and offered him a job. He told me to ...........well he didn't accept the job. Preferred to be a " free agent". Love the guy!! :ok:

I have just received this sad news. Anyone who served on the Vung Tau Ferry (in the 70's) would well remember him.

RIP "Red".

BC

Vale CDRE JLW (Red) Merson OAM RAN Rtd

Dear all,

I learnt last night that Commodore Red Merson passed away peacefully on the 10th February. It is understood that arrangements for his interment are being or have been made privately.

As well as being well known in naval circles, Commodore Merson was Federal President of the Naval Association from 1990 to 1993 and was instrumental in the introduction of the NAA national journal The White Ensign in 1991. Its success was due to his guidance and leadership as Chairman of the NAA White Ensign Management Committee from it founding in 1991 until 2005.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate and give thanks for his life at the chapel HMAS WATSON on Monday 7th March 2016 at 14:00. Medals may be worn. As this is a normal working day at WATSON, security regulations will be in force, and WATSON has requested that attendees inform the administration at HMAS Watson in advance of the service.

Regards

Peter Cooke-Russell

Nice bloke Red. Had a bit of dealing with him when we re-started the Darwin Naval Association in the early 90's.

Vale Red Merson, thankyou for your service to Australia and it's sailors.
