Following on from the post above, I received the following e-mail from 16th MOBI Intake Chippy, John Quick today... :evil3:

Rick

Please see posting on death of Garry Stewart (I think he was of the second intake). When I last saw him late July or early August he was off to the hospital for treatment and he appeared gaunt and very weak - so much so that I must have been three steps past him before I recognised who it was and turned to greet him.

It's a sad loss. He was such a gentleman.

Quickie

It's very sad when it seems that every time I pick up my copy of 'Skilled Hands At Sea' nowadays, it's to confirm the intake of another lost Apprentice...

G. H. (Garry) Stewart was indeed a Tiffy of the Second MOBI Intake of January 1957... :salute:

I then received this e-mail via Peter Maher... :evil3:

Peter,

Our members may like to know of the passing of Garry Stewart (Captain RAN) last Sunday morning.

I received an e-mail from his wife Diana the text of which follows:

Garry passed away peacefully at 8am this morning surrounded by his family.

His health declined rapidly over the past week.

Over the past few days he enjoyed listening to us read to him the messages that many people have emailed and phoned through.

Funeral arrangements

Garry's funeral will be held this Friday, 21 November 2008 at 1.30pm, St Matthews Anglican Church, Cnr The Corso and Darley Road, Manly.

The family looks forward to celebrating Garry's life with those who can attend.

Garry enlisted in January 1957 (Intake #2 at Nirimba) as an artificer apprentice and had a long and distinguished career in the Marine Engineering Branch culminating in his promotion to Captain.

He was a true friend and will be sorely missed.

Regards

Bill Shaw

Garry would also have been one of the very few ex-MOBI's to make ollll Captain, no mean feat in itself... :salute:

Vale Garry, rest on your oars... [-o<

Thanks Archie, I will pass that on.

John, a very nice gesture from Archie Miller. You may wish to pass it on to MobiLand.

Yours aye

Bob, very moving, I doubt if anyone will do the same for me.

If anyone contacts you, I will have a copy on CD, so an address is all required, no charge.

Archie.

Hi John And Val

Yes, by all means send the YouTube link on to those who might be interested. I'm fairly useless with the computer myself and will be on a big learning curve next year. We're missing Garry very much so having those pictures to play is just wonderful and I'm forever grateful to one of my sons in law for putting it together but it will only be there for December.

have a great Christmas

Diana

Hello Diana,

Many thanks for thinking of me and sending the YouTube link, have joined and now have it on my playlist, music and pictures can combine to make a wonderful story, especially this time,

May I send it on to our Nirimba family?

All the best at this sad time and for the Christmas season,

Take care,

Jack and Val

Such a fitting :notworthy: tribute lasts forever... [-o<

I created a similar montage that was played at my late brother-in-law Don's funeral,
my sister still plays it regularly to comfort her... (Think I'll get started on mine...!) H.C.

Very moving an brought back some memories from the past.

The early posts of Garry's passing didn't gel with me because of his intake and details that seemed removed from my career.

As soon as I saw the montage, at the late teens stage, I realised who he was and I immediately had many memories from my subconsious and a flood of emotions that followed.

I, as a young tiffy, in fact saw service with Garry on the Vung Tau ferry and I remembered him as a great bloke and mentor.

Thank's for the link and the comments.

RIP

Garry
