Tom Shaw .....mobi17Eternal Patrol - CPOMTP4SM Kevan Marengo It is with much sadness that I report the death of Kevan, aged 73, who died at 0600 this morning in Townsville.
Family members from Victoria have been with him for the past two weeks and SAANQ Secretary, Garth Schmidt has been a regular visitor.
Kev had cancer for a while, but it was only two weeks ago they diagnosed that it had progressed to his brain. He maintained his sense of humour to the end.
Ken Chilvers said in an email yesterday "It is the first time I have not been able to talk to him. He was looking forward to going home and DVA was arranging to modify his bathroom etc etc but things went "ape shit" [his terminology] and he remains at the Hospice."
"We both joined Nirimba on 5th January 1958 and were in Bass Division together. I am not sure what Ships he went to when we left Nirimba but we caught up in Singapore when he was on Oberon. Kev and I served on Onslow and Ovens together and I can vouch he was quite a character."
All that know him will remember him as one of the best and I for one have many fond memories of the time that we served together on Ovens. Work hard, play harder seemed to be our motto.
He joined Pussers in 1958 and and discharged in 1978.
He joined submarines in 1963 and served on HMS Oberon, HMS Artemis, HMS Tabard, HMS Trump, HMAS Oxley, HMAS Onslow and HMAS Ovens, but unfortunately no record of his time in skimmers is available.
In his SAA profile he wrote "Served in boats '63 to '78. Must have had a good time or I wouldn't have stayed so long."
He has been a member of the SAA since 1992.
Rum sales in Heaven are about to rise, have a tot for me mate.
It is believed that the funeral will be in Bowen where he has lived for many years, confirmation will be advised when known.
The submarine community offers it thoughts and condolences to his family.
Kev has been added to the the list of Australian Submariners on
Eternal Patrol THE SUBMARINER’S PRAYER O Father, Hear our prayer to thee
For your humble servants
Beneath the sea
In the depths of oceans, as oft they stray
So far from night, so far from day
We would ask your guiding light to glow
To make their journey safe below
Please oft times grant them patient mind
Then ‘ere the darkness won’t them blind
They seek thy protection from the deep
Please grant them peace when ‘ere they sleep
Of their homes and loved ones far away
We ask you care for them each day
Until they surface once again
To drink the air and feel the rain
We ask your guiding hand to show
A safe progression sure and slow.
Dear Lord, please hear our prayer to thee,
For your humble servants
Beneath the sea.
Amen
