Shortly afterward I received confirmation of PK's sad news from Bob Mummery... :evil3:

Dear All,

It is with much sadness that I advise the passing of Roger Oyston. Roger had been suffering from a prolonged illness that finally claimed him at 2135 yesterday (26 Jan 2015)
aged 72 years. He was at home with his wife Carol. Our condolences to Carol, Roger’s children, his brother Chris and other members of his extended family and close friends.

Many of you will remember Roger as a; MOBI (July 1958 Entry), Shipwright, Shipwright Officer and Marine Engineer Officer. Roger had an excellent sense of humour and was
much a raconteur able to pull stories, most of which had some element of truth about them, and relay them with flair. He will be missed by many.

Yours aye

Bob Mummery

Whilst I only mer Roger for the first time, and then only briefly, at the HMAS Nirimba 50th Anniversary Reunion in Canberra in 2006, I knew his brother Chris, another over
achieving MOBI made Shipwright Officer, quite well... Both highly respected, I'm sure Roger's passing will leave a great void in the lives of those who loved him.

Rest on your oars, Roger, you're voyage is done... RIP... [-o< H.C.

It is with a heavy heart that I let all MOBIs know that Ex LCDR Roger Oyston has passed away.

I only met Roger once in my 24 years in Pussers. He came across as thoroughly professional but likeable at the same time.
He passed away late last night or early this morning .
I found out through Facebook on the Shipmates for Cancer page.
No funeral details except that it will be held in a Crows Znest, Brisbane.

My apologies for posting this but many many people here knew a Roger in his Career

Cheers

[-X No apologies necessary, PK...

I apologised as a result of having to pass on the sad news of Roger but also because the couple of recent bereavemants in family and acquaintances including Roger are just coming too frequently.

It coulkd have been Chris that I met but id never know now afetr all theyears and its not as if they didnt look alike (much)

A bit like Al and Rim Dicunnis so identical that the rumour goes that they actually did a sub for each other on a ship at least once!!!!

Toughen up Peter go eat some concrete!!

Sad news indeed! Didn't know Roger well but met him a few times socially, and as already related by Bob Mummery, his sense of humour and "story" telling ability was something that kept many engaged for hours. Vale Roger, may you have fair winds and smooth sea on your journey.

I have never met the Oystons, but have heard many good words about them, and it's sad to see a brother pass on. Rest your oars and RIP Roger, we have the watch. :ok:

An update on the funeral arrangements for Roger, from Bob Mummery... :evil3:

Dear All,

The text that follows is an extract from an email sent by Tom Davies:

Good evening brothers, loved ones and family,

The funeral of our dear brother, friend, husband, father, Mobi and all round decent man will be held at 1100 at The Anglican Church, Crows’ Nest, Queensland on 02 February 2015. Have a look through the addressees and if I have missed anyone please pass on as you feel appropriate. Carol will have obviously notified all family members, however if I have missed any Navy personnel, please pass on.

Aye

Tom

Some of you will have already received Tom’s email, the double-up is because of my auto distribution lists.

The Navy family, and MOBIs in particular, are a cohesive mob and I would expect that the roll up to Roger’s funeral will be massive. It is just a shame that most of us in Western Australia will be unable to make it.

Kind regards to all and a quiet prayer for Roger on Monday 2nd of February.

Yours aye

Bob Mummery

Met Roger socially when he was in Cairns and ran into him a couple of times in the Qantas Club.

RIP Roger.

Far to young to be taken from this world.
