I never met Graham, and whilst my condolences go out to Graham's family, my thought particularly go out to Bruce Sloper, Graham's brother and fellow MOBI Chippy... By all that I read on Facebook, Graham was highly regarded by all who came in contact with him... |

I received the following via my Naval Association: COMMODORE GRAHAM SLOPER HAS RETURNED HIS BEDDING Well the big guy has posted out! Very peacefully in the end. I think our wheel chair episode satisfied his sense of fun and he decided to go! Now the challenge - and I am up for it! We need to have his farewell before Thursday because of a whole lot of complicated family stuff! I will do my best to get it organised. If all goes to plan it will be 1030 Wednesday at Maria Regina Catholic Church in Avalon followed by a wake at Avalon Beach Rsl Club (I have booked the church but not the club yet - I also haven't cleared it with my mate down at the Funeral place) So watch this space for details. Tamara Sloper-Harding. I never had the pleasure, but Vale Graham. |

Only met him a couple of times but he left a lasting impression! A great person and from what I observed a fine and upstanding leader. Vale Graham Sloper, and condolences to his family. |

Graham Sloper was the XO in Yarra in the late 70's when I was a newby PO. He was certainly a lot different to the other XOs I'd served under who seemed to have the "Born to rule" mentality CJ talks about. Slopes was different. I remember one time we spent about 2 hours searching up and down the Northern NSW coast before he was satisfied he had found the spot. We then cleared lower deck for a Fishing Comp.... He also arranged to have a 'roof' put over (what was previously) the Mortar well and had some early arcade games put in what had previously been the Mortar Handling room, turning it into a JS rec space. [The mortars were removed in one of the infamous half life refits] The only problem was that said roof stopped the Ikara missile from loading onto the launcher as it had (somehow) warped the Missile Assembly Room and the doors would not close or the rails align. |

No problem for a warrie ......as long as the JS were happy ................don't concern yourself with the prime function....... |
