Sobering when you see the number. Saw the mates name in the 2020 group (he was only 66) then realised that his father was ex Navy and passed away some years ago.

This occurred a few years back when an ex chippy mate of mine on Tobruk (Ian Kerr) escorted a digger up to the Lone Pine memorial where he was taken aback after seeing his own name on the memorial.
Debbie explained that when the diggers went over the top they gave their dog tags to their mates to hang onto. Apparently the ‘mates’ scored a direct hit by a Turk shell and that the dog tag was retrieved later as evidence he was KIA.
