Just in the past 3 weeks I have come into contact with two friends who have had their identities stolen, bank accounts accessed and monies removed, telephone, mobiles and internet accounts shut down, and they're having a devil of a job fighting their way through it all. One is a Cairns doctor, one is a NSW Central Coast builder. Both noticed the problems on the day that it all happened, which was lucky in that all could be frozen asap, but the after effects continue. One bank account actually had an extra 8,000 transferred into it, and the other had a 5-figure sum gone. As it turned out, the police have identified that it all happened due to them using their phones for banking, and both phones were Samsung. The builder has had to change the spelling of his name (by one syllable) to start to activate everything again as his name is now suspect/marked. The police have advised both that the fallout from all this will affect them 'for years'..... Be aware.

I do not use free wifi in stores etc and have my VPN activated on my phone and tablet if I need to access anything over my normal phone network.
VPN is also active on my home network, along with antivirus/physing protection. VPN's are relatively cheap

Expect more like this... "Just got a call from “Medicare” because of the virus they were asking to update my details so I will get the $750 government payment. Please do not tell anyone your name or any other information. If it was Medicare they would be able to tell me what my name is. Medicare do not ring you, and you don’t need to do anything to get government funds. Disgusting scammers at work again"

Message from the Tasmanian Police... ...via Doug Green's FB page... Have you received a text that looks like this? Whatever you do - don't click on the link and delete immediately. Scammers are back at it and targeting the elderly and vulnerable - please talk to older people you know to make sure they don't get caught out. Detective-Sgt Gen Hickman, of the Serious Organised Crime Unit, says that text messages are currently circulating claiming that your bank account is on hold and you need to click on the link to take your account off hold. If you click on the link it takes you to a webpage that looks real - it asks you for private information including your bank account details. This information is then used to access your accounts, phone, and Netbank, change passwords and obtain funds or identity information for other purposes. If you're concerned, ring your bank or financial institution to verify your account status and if there's a genuine issue, visit the bank in person.

As this was posted on the HMAS Nirimba Facebook page you might have already seen this... The Scammers have started already. It might be a bit of a giveaway that they left the 'T' out of Government...

Please see details of scam being sent to DVA clients and others. Can you please give this wide dissemination. The hosted content includes the myGov branding and appears Legitimate in appearance to the recipient. The content relates to COVID-19 payments offered by the Australian Government. 6 May 2020 What’s happened? Australia Post is aware of fraudulent emails being sent using their branding and prompting customers to click on a link. The emails falsely claim a package hasn’t been delivered, due to its weight exceeding the limit – and it includes a link to click on to ‘Pay Fee’ or seek ‘Further information.’ These links lead to a fake Australia Post website requesting personal and financial information. Here are some examples of what to look out for: How do I stay safe?Note that Australia Post will never email or text message you asking for personal information, financial information or a payment. • If you receive one of these messages, delete it and don’t respond. • If you are ever unsure of the legitimacy of a message, contact the business it claims to be from separately to check if they are likely to have sent the message. Use contact details you find through a legitimate source, like the business’s official website, and not those contained in the suspicious message. • If you’ve sent personal or financial information to a scam email address or entered it into a scam website and you’re worried your identity may have been stolen, you can contact IDCARE, Australia’s free national identity and cyber support service, on 1300 432 273. IDCARE also has an IDCARE factsheet for customers impacted by Australia Post SMS scams. We encourage you to share this information with your family, friends and colleagues. More informationEmails or other online messages that pretend to be from organisations you know, to try and trick you into handing over personal information, is called phishing. The Australian Cyber Security Centre has a video on How to Spot a Phishing message. You can report scams to Scamwatch. To report a security incident or crime to police, visit cyber.gov.au/report.
