I think a lot of the hostility towards service personnel originates from the radical ratbags and their followers in universities - seen as a cool thing to do, and expected, as we were part of the 'establishment'.

I can remember the looks of loathing I used to get when I attended classes at ANU in uniform.

The thing they fail to realise, or don't want to acknowledge, is that they wouldn't have their lifestyle and the ability to protest and harangue everyone, if it wasn't for the servicemen and servicewomen who put their lives on the line fighting for their freedom.

Sure I think they should have a right to protest and disrupt the lives of everyone else going about their business - provided they can dodge the firehoses, rubber bullets and for the real unruly ones; real bullets. :gib:

The most important thing to remember about that Sunday special was that it was produced and directed by one of his longtime friends, not an independant ( what are they) documentary maker.
Channel 9 only showed a section of the entire movie.
The movie was produced to ASSIST John Kerry's political future.
Much like Michael Moores movie. With good editing and selective vision you can make anything appear as you WANT it too.

I have seen documents about one of the reasons for being involved in Vietnam. Actual letters have been produced recently from the era.
Vietnam did not ask for our help as the general public was led to believe but the Govt of the day actually volunteered our troops.
Political pressure was applied and it wasn't rejected and over 500 of our service personel paid the ultimate price.

As I remember the "Nasho's" were not required to go to Vietnam unless they " put their hands up" which a lot of them did......God bless em ! !
I will stand corrected on the matter of Whitlam pulling out the "Troops" from Vietnam. I recall that, that was part of his election campain to do just that. Similar to Lathams' to pull out of Iraq.

Exactly right about Whitlam. His big ploy was to pull the troops out of Vietnam, even though Vietnamisation of the war effort had started 18 months previously. The sheep voted for him anyhow.

What he did do, however, was to abolish National Service as soon as parliament sat for the first time. Nashos were able to just 'drop kit and walk' from that day forward, even in Vietnam, and quite a few did. As many more did not, not wanting to leave their mates in the lurch.

For those blokes, I have the greatest admiration. It brings back those oft-quoted words of praise:

'Greater love hath no man, that he lay down his life for a friend.'

Cheers

Dags, your links proved fascinating reading... I only hope that everybody eligible to vote in the US does as much research into the background of their candidates...! :finga:

Lucky for us none of the troops in Iraq are conscripts otherwise the sheep might have voted for Latham too.

Whitlam should have been tried for treason for letting conscripts drop their kit and walk.

I can't answer the 2 URL's that you posted as I can get into trouble.
I will say that on this computer, I or any one can type anything I want published, word it so it sounds correct, then send it in.
The Swift Boat people are anti democrat, don't matter who runs.

Like I posted above, I was there and Kerry deserved all the medals he was awarded.

These people, even though they where in NAM to me are the lowest form of life as to discredit Kerry's medals, they discredits mine and everyone else's medals who served honorably.

As far as the atrocities that happened in NAM, people want to sweep it under the rug, cause they will get in trouble, as they where in command when this happened.

Think about what the media is trying to do here.

Take a rumour and turn into almost a degree of fact, publish it and watch THEIR ratings go up.

It is the US style of "Tall Poppy syndrome".

Never let truth get in the way of a good story.
