Dags, it occurred to me that a lot of people wouldn't know about the wildcat flat and why it got it's name. Perhaps you could pass on the reason and a bit of a description why it did?

Little things like that could give Saarikko a very detailed view of the old girl, and a greater understanding as to why us old farts view ships as living things rather than just transport. Likewise, if anyone else has a snippet about the Brisbane, could they share it on here as well? It would help her personality endure far into the future.

Cheers

CJ

Power Of the DDG

I was on HMAS Stalwart (Flag Ship of the RAN at The time) we were in company with Supply and Brisbane on our way to the West via the Southern Ocean During a refueling off Supply Stalwart on her Starboard side and Brisbane on her Port Brisbane and Supply were also caring out a Jackstay transfer with personel as the sea was quite rough and choppy both ships listed towards each then suddenly listed out thus turning the jackstay into a giant sling shot and sending the transferee skyrocketing into space as he detached himself from the jackstay.

Well both ships(Stalwart and Brisbane) were ordered to carry out emergency breakaways and rescue the sailor (If I remember correctly it was Brisane engineer who was on the jackstay) Brisbane and Stalwart put on the power and commenced to carry out a 180 Brisbane realy put a show of power on she was like a grey hound by the time the Stalwart had completed a 30 deg turn Brisbane was on her way back to the rescue by the time we had completed 180 the sailor was onboard Brisbane

By this time our Rescue Helo was ready for takeoff

Ya got me CJ. I've got no idea why it is called wildcat flat. I just know we, living in the fwd, TAS/RP, mess, used to use it for somewhere to have a durrie without having to go out on the uppers.

Sorry Dags, I wasn't trying to put you on the spot. I'd been told that it was called the wildcat flat was that, if you were down there at the time, the noises the winches/capstan used to make when they were in operation sounded like a bunch of wildcats fighting.

Never got to hear it myself, I was always closed up at special sea dutymen in Repair 3.

Cheers

CJ

Ax was my part of ship. Either there or blind pilotage penciller in the Ops room.

As an aside, there were 2 RP's whose specials were blind pilotage. One from each watch. When we got back from GW1 the other RP was a Brisbane native so when we sailed into Brisbane I did the blind pilotage so he could be on the uppers. I was spewin' because the welcome in Brisbane, boats helicopters people on the wharf, was huge. Anyway, when we sailed into Sydney it was my turn on the uppers. Mate... incredible feeling. And unbeknownst to me my parents, brother and sister and her family were waitng on the wharf.

Made it a day to remember always.
