saarikko wrote: Mooloolaba winter winds have arrived just in time to cause the cancellation of the planned first night dive tonight. We will try again next week. We did manage to dive on Wednesday morning with the winds at 12 knots SW we headed out in 1 to 2 metres swell. The dive once again was excellent but this time visibility was down to 8 metres and 'The Fighting 41' really turned it on as far as the rush of water through her with each passing swell. One of our guest divers, an experienced wreck diver, was swimming outside the ship passing one of the newly cut access hatches when 'Proud Mary' took a breath in and the ensuing current through the hatch meant that Robyn found herself inside the ship instead. Another diver was caught momentarily by the surge and held against the hatches on the side of the funnel until the current reversed and let her go. There certainly are no dull moments on this ship..............Another question for the resident historians and purveyors of tall tales.......What is the origin and history of the hand drawn mural.
Ah yes, she's settling down to her new home...
Speaking of which, I've finally created a new album in our Main Photo Gallery entitled 'The Steel Cat' DDG41 Rests in Peace... to find a home for all the photos submitted by Matt Saarikko, Peter Maher, Dags and others... Thanks for your great contributions guys...
For your underwater experience you can access all of the albums in the RAN Skilled Hands Main Photo Gallery at any time by clicking on the link in the 3rd panel down, top left of this page, or if you want to go straight to The Steel Cat in her new home, simply click here:

After the galeforce winds of Saturday I wasn't expecting much better for Sunday morning but woke to a light westerly... so it was off to the diveshop for the day. We set out with 14 on board, Nigel with 4 Wreck Diver course students, Simon with 5 visiting divers and yours truly running a tour for a friend. As usual Ian McKinnon skippered us to the Brisbane. Without the pressures of organising a group and leading them around, I was able to take Mark for the diving tour of his life so far. During our two dives (each lasting 41 minutes) we combed over and through every accessible part of the ship. The mooring lines and anchor chains are now covered with algae and barnacles, thousands of fish school around the hull. We spotted a school of tiny squid on the portside of the comms room, several trevally feeding around the ship, six cuttlefish under the stern between the rudders and several jellyfish drifting by. A lone pipe fish was hanging around the rails at the stern.
The "41s" on the hull are now becoming less visible as the sealife begins to cover the hull. The geared turbines are no longer shiny but have taken on an ochre hue. The mural (collage of texta drawn images) is still clearly visible as each diver gives it a wipe to see the sketches. More and more divers are enrolling for the Wreck Diver rating so they can venture within the hull. Life is tough here...............................................Matt
