I was a school kid during the Vietnam era so therefore all clothing was supplied by my very own fashion advisor, Mum.

One time she bought me a pale purple shirt, wide paisley tie, light blue shorts and long socks to wear to my cousins 14th birthday party. Add this to my Bata Scout school shoes complete with lion paw print soles and secret compass in the heel and the fact that she had let me grow my hair so that it just covered my ears and I was one cool lookin dude. A real 13 year old chick magnate. :rr:

Nothing will ever beat Miller shirts, flared jeans, shoes with a chunky 3 inch heel (notice I didn’t say high heel shoes) and a belt with a huge big buckle. Now that was cool. :supz:

Even you know that you have more room to move with studdies on backwards.

The only matelots I knew with white skivvies well not so much on the white side, more on the brown to shades of white, were submariners. I must admit the green tinge on the neck line was a little overboard.

The only fashion statment I made was the side burns. By the time I had them at a good shape and lenght, the damn things were out of style.

Lets face it guys! buying all those fancy clothes dipped into precious drinking funds. Bring back the easy going pub fashion, shorts holey t-shirt and getters. If an red blood Aussie women doesn't go for that she must be blind. At least she'll know that there will be house keeping money.

I remember a mate of mine who had a pair of high waist, flared trousers made by a local tailor in Singapore. Following a good run in Samberwang had an accident with a storm drain (as normally happens). :drinkers:

Well, he took the trousers back to see if they could be repaired. When he picked them up the tailor had turned them into a pair of high waist, flared shorts with cuffs! :-k

I still can't help but laugh each time I remember the incident. Just the look on his face when he saw these shorts, priceless!

Unfortunately, I wasn't old enough to see that movie when it came out in '69. Must get it out on DVD one day (if available). Never have seen it come on the telly ... as yet.

I did see a movie the other day with Jack Nicholson, a very young Danny De Vito and John (not James) Belushi (who OD'd in the Hollywood Hotel). It was called "Goin' South" ... a Western.

The actors name I was looking for was Toni Basil. Her one hit wonder was "Hey Mickey" the video showed her in a cheer girls outfit.

Ok Bobcat I have finished with the 60's TV and Film.

Down in the Bay, there are a lot of young bucks driving an assortment of old cars. Several mint condition EK Station wagon and HR Station wagons. I've been here for nearly 2 years and I haven't found the drive in theatre yet, so I can safely assume the lads don't know best thing about owning a SW. More room in the back for the squarie and esky.

It still amazes me the number of late 50's and early 60's cars on the road.
There is a Hk ute getting around with a brand new fuel inject 5.0 lt Commodore motor in the engine bay. goes well to boot.

Every now and then a little gem will turn up. Today the was a 'S' series Valiant cruising through. I didn't get to see if it was push button auto.
My father had one in the early 70's but again gave it away for a song.

Remember the thick plastic seat covers these old cars left the factory with. Good for keeping the dirt of the seats vinyl but the 3 degree burns to unprotected skin the first hot day on summer was a bit over the top.

Most of those car engines ran on standard grade petrol. and you could half fill your tank with 10 shillings worth of petrol back before Decimal currency 14th Feb 1966. There's another discussion subject.

I want to get me one of those cars and see if they are still chick magnets like way back when. Well a man can dream can't he. Dream of what?

I won a race late one night from the 'Wang" back to the ship. The only condition was that it had to be via the storm drains including under roads!

You can guess what we came across especially in the dark sections, and the rats, they were huge.

Needless to say our clobber had to be disposed of, it was discusting and trashed - litterally. Great at the time, certainly caught peoples attention on the gangway. Another fine example set by the senior sailors!! :partyman:
