Yeah, my parents had the old '3 flying ducks' on the wall for years.

Never had the platform shoes, but I did time on the Darwin reconstruction team with a chippy that loved them. Stretch's mate from memory. He eventually got ejected from pussers for getting caught with a bag of whoopee weed in Cerberus. One of the best things pussers ever did.

I remember my first run to Vung Tau in 69, and Nobby Clarke (the skipper) getting on the piping system 2 or 3 days out and letting us all know what to expect when we got there.

He said there wouldn't be much to worry about, apart from the explosives that could be drifting down the delta, and there had been a ship sunk in one of the harbours there by enemy frogmen, and we might get zapped by a couple of heavy missiles but they'd probably only hit the flight deck and kill a few around the impact area. :(

'No worries' I thought, until I realised I was going to be on the flight deck helping offload cargo......

Nice place. Not.

Speaking of marks on the wall ... did anyone have "flying ducks"?

Have them - it was part of woodworking at school to make one - of course we had them!!

Used a spokeshave, a shit tins of sandpaper and a heap of varnish (still looked crap!)

Yes ... but I bet your mum just loved  them!

Don't knock the "Flying Ducks" they fetch a good price in the second hand and antique shops.

Speaking of mini skirts, and back to the Quarter Deck bar, Image if you would, a girl working down the path, with mini skirt and some sailor spotted that she was wearing a "G" string.

Poor girl would have been pack assaulted, mentally by the tars.

Oh to be young again :snakeman: :

The sixties were an eye opener, movies and theatre, magazines and TV shows. all began to explore the boundaries of censorship.

Yes I can relate to the Mustang Icon. I remember seeing my first Soft top Mustang in Perth in the mid 60's.

Bobcat,
How good is your TV memory?

Ever watch a show about "Cobb Co" called "Whiplash"?

Who played the lead role?

Being one of the "old fart brigade" I have trouble remembering back that far, however I do remember my first trip to Vung Tau in November 1971. We were somewhere past Darwin and a bit apprehensive about what was ahead.

I had left home, with my first wife 8 1/2 months pregnant. Yes you guessed it, I was informed that my daughter Jo-ann was born and I was still 3 weeks away from getting back home. No dramas, everyone survived the experience and my little sweetie will be 33 next month.

I must say, the reason I love getting together with ex Navy guys and girls is not just the life we had in common, but the stories that are recalled from my magical years, the 60's

Great topic CJ and good to see your having such fun with it Lou.

Thanks for the vote of confidence.

I was going through some of mine and my fathers photos today, there is photos of Flinders Nval Base (FNB), in the late 50's and early 60's
A lot on the SYDNEY (carrier) and MELBOURNE (carrier) DUCHESS(daring)
Old aircraft from the Seafury, gannets and sea venom to the odd A4.
Isn't it odd you remember the good times and not the unpleasant periods.

:supz: :supz: :supz: :supz:
I think I'll go and pickle some more rememberance cells.
Now where did I put that remote control my father invented. Ah there it is on the other end of the mop head. #-o #-o #-o

The clothes from that era seem to be coming back into style, with flared jeans now being worn by a lot of young ones. Wonder if they'll go the whole hog with striped & flared pants, platform shoes, and cheesecloth shirts.

Hope they do, it'd be good to have a laugh at someone else's expense for a while.

Then of course, some real fashion victim could wear white patent leather boots with light blue trousers and a pale blue jacket. #-o

Eh Rick?

Cheers

CJ
