A question for you electrical types..... I have just fitted a second 12v deep cycle battery to my camper trailer that I agreed to buy under sufferance. (I'm married, didn't want it, wife did, you know the problem). I'm about to hook it into the 12v fitted system, am capable enough to do so, but I have struck a snag. I want to install a 3-position battery-selector switch that engages for either battery 1 OR battery 2 OR off. Only switches I can find to date are 4-position, where you can select battery 1, or battery 2, or both 1&2, or off. Knowing my wife's total lack of understanding of ANYTHING technical I don't want to install anything where she can turn the (unwanted) 2-wheeled accessory into a ticking time-bomb or mushroom cloud. So I thought I'd ask what would happen if she did select the 'both battery' switch? I'm assuming that it would turn the 12v system into a 24v system and things would overheat and go kablooey. Is that correct? I'm after a wife proof system, hence the one battery OR the other battery setup, and I'm sure you can see my concerns. Any sensible suggestions?

topjars wrote: Sell the wife Best advice given, I assume that its a four wheel drive, dual battery switch ? Normally the Battery selector switches only switches the positive from the Battery, so you should be safe, the biggest issue is using both, when one of the batteries is dead and the other is at a higher level, you'll lose a lot of the charge as the batteries equalise. You are correct Bruce.
I had one of those switches in my old 80 Series Landcruiser. When I was travelling, I would select "Both" so that both would be charging at the same time. When we were camping, I would select "1" or "2" to use only one battery for accessories. That way you would still have one fully charged battery for starting.
But when you are in "Both", if you have damaged cells in one battery, you could also end up with problems in the good battery as well.
But, back to you issue CJ. There's no real problems if "Both" is selected, you still get 12v, only longer than one battery.

Not sure where this topic would go but I have a heap of reference books from the mid 50's through 70's. Mainly radar , communications etc. Any idea what they are worth or the best way to get rid of them , other than a big bonfire?

They loved my old USN CCS maintenance manuals. Bruce
