Went and "early voted" yesterday. To get in to the voting area we had to run the gauntlet of blue and read volunteers (yes, an old F Troop saying shoulder to shoulder and backs to the wall). The song which included "clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right" immediately came to mind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8StG4fFWHqg

Well, we made it to the table and told the one responsible for ticking us off (and she did tick us off) asked for my last name. Ever so slowly and ever so clearly I said M-A-C-K-E-N-Z-I-E (due to her version of spelling that took three attempts but each time slowly and clearly). She then asked for my first name and I offered (again three times B-R-I-A-N even though two of the three times she said "Y" for the "I").

She told me I was not on roll, so I respelt my last name M-A-C-K-E-N-Z-I-E AGAIN and she apologised, saying that she had spelt it M-I-C-K-E-N-Z-I-E. Finally get the last name and first name correct. Found on the list and I confirmed our address.

Now, you would think that getting my wifes details correct would have been easy but, similar issue with Mackenzie and her first name.

If anyone intends to early poll try and pick the Australian.................

Picked up our postal vote material today, and on reviewing the senate candidates noted that ex RAN lawyer and supporter and advocate for a "Breaker" Morant pardon James "Jim" Unkles is running again but for the Trumpet Of Patriots. I like Jim, he has their number one slot, hope he get his wish this time, certainly far better than many of the others standing in Victoria.

:salute1: ANZAC Day - Background and History

Image

25 April is the national day of commemoration of Australia and New Zealand for victims of war and for recognition of the role of their armed forces. It marks the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.

ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers in those forces became known as ANZACs. ANZAC Day is a commemoration of the anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli, Turkey on 25 April in 1915. When Great Britain declared war against Germany for its invasion of Belgium in 1914, Australia and New Zealand, as Dominions within the British Empire, regarded themselves automatically also at war.

At dawn on 25 April 1915, the first of approximately 70,000 soldiers from the Allies landed at Gallipoli. The objective was to drive through to Istanbul, take Turkey out of the war and to provide supplies to Russia in its fight against Germany. Out of these 70,000 soldiers, more than 20,000 were Australian and New Zealand soldiers. What had been planned as a bold stroke became a stalemate after the invading troops failed to reach their objective on the first day. For the next eight months they clung to the land they had captured, before eventually withdrawing at the end of 1915.

After both sides had suffered heavy casualties, the Allied forces were evacuated. It is estimated that 8,700 Australian and 2,700 New Zealanders were killed. One year later, in 1916, the first anniversary of the landing was observed in Australia, New Zealand and England and by troops in Egypt. That year, 25 April was officially named ‘ANZAC Day’ by the Acting Australian Prime Minister, George Pearce.

Today we speak of an ‘ANZAC tradition’, meaning the ideals of courage, endurance and mateship that are still relevant to this day.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them... [-o< LEST WE FORGET...

The Herald sun Vic. today had a story of Weary Dunlop and his medals being stolen and the replaced by the Medal section Canberra.
His granddaughter received the medals which had been increased with two clasps and one medal.
He was enlisted 1935 to 1946 but has been given Active service medal bar Vietnam and Vietnam Logistics and support Medal.
A great disservice to a fine man who would roll over in his grave to receive something he did not earn.
The Australian Service medal and clasp SW Pacific is correct.
Somebody me thinks needs a reefing you nowhere for the fopar.
