What records show any proof of First Nations monitoring or controlling the ships from Asia (12th Century) and Europe, in their navigation around Australia?

In the course of family tree research "Toots" has found another first/strange circumstance (well back and to one side - not direct line). One Thomas Chipperfield participated in a ballot (marked on his papers) for a VC (Zeebrugge 22/23 April 1918). He was unsuccessful but it seems, at the time there was a ballot system so that all ranks were covered in the course of an action of note. Wiki points out that this was the last time such a ballot was held.
