It is with deep regret that I inform you of the crossing of the bar of our Past National President Admiral Mike Hudson AC RAN Rtd. He passed away on Saturday night at the Royal North Shore Hospital. I have been advised that his funeral will be held in the Garden Island Chapel Sydney at about 1300 on Friday 4 March 2005. [-o<

1. IT IS WITH GREAT SADNESS THAT I INFORM THE NAVY OF THE PASSING OF THE LATE ADMIRAL MIKE HUDSON ON SUNDAY 27 FEB 05 IN SYDNEY.

2. ADMIRAL HUDSON WAS BORN IN 1933 AND JOINED THE RAN AS A CADET MIDSHIPMAN IN 1947. AFTER GRADUATING FROM THE NAVAL COLLEGE ADMIRAL HUDSON TRAINED AS A SEAMAN OFFICER PECIALISING IN NAVIGATION. DURING HIS DISTINGUISHED CAREER HE COMMANDED HMA SHIPS VENDETTA, BRISBANE, STALWART AND MELBOURNE. HE ALSO SERVED AS THE FLAG OFFICER COMMANDING HER MAJESTY’S AUSTRALIAN FLEET (NOW KNOWN AS THE MARITIME COMMANDER) AND ASSISTANT CHIEF OF DEFENCE FORCE (POLICY)

3. ADMIRAL HUDSON WAS APPOINTED AS THE CHIEF OF NAVAL STAFF COMMANDING THE NAVY ON 21 APR 85. DURING HIS SIX YEAR TENURE ADMIRAL HUDSON ADDRESSED IMPENDING BLOCK OBSOLESCENCE ISSUES SIGNING CONTRACTS FOR THE COLLINS CLASS SUBMARINES, ANZAC FRIGATES AND PALUMA CLASS SURVEY VESSELS. ALSO DURING THIS PERIOD NAVAL INFRASTRUCTURE WAS OVERHAULED, TWO OCEAN BASING COMMENCED AND SERVICE CONDITIONS WERE IMPROVED.

4. SHORTLY BEFORE HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE NAVY, PRIME MINISTER HAWKE ANNOUNCED THAT ADMIRAL HUDSON WOULD BE PROMOTED TO FOUR STAR ADMIRAL IN RECOGNITION OF HIS SERVICE. ADMIRAL HUDSON RETIRED FROM THE RAN ON 8 MAR 91 AFTER 44 YEARS SERVICE.

5. IN RETIREMENT ADMIRAL HUDSON ACTED AS A CONSULTANT TO THE NSW GOVERNMENT IN RELATION TO THE MINEHUNTER PROJECT, SERVED AS CHAIRMAN OF THE COOPERATIVE RESEARCH CENTRE FOR THE ANTARCTIC AND SOUTHERN OCEAN ENVIRONMENT AND SPECIAL ADVISOR TO SIKORSKY AIRCRAFT AUSTRALIA. HE ALSO SERVED ON THE NAVY LEAGUE ADVISORY COUNCIL AND WAS THE PRESIDENT OF THE NAVAL ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA. OF NOTE ADMIRAL HUDSON IN RETIREMENT TOOK AN ACTIVE INTEREST IN THE WELFARE OF NAVAL VETERANS AND SERVING PERSONNEL.

6. ADMIRAL HUDSONS FUNERAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD AT GARDEN ISLAND MEMORIAL CHAPEL AT 1300 ON FRIDAY 04 MAR 05. DRESS S2’S WITH MOURNING BRASSARD. FURTHER DETAILS WILL BE ADVISED.

What can I say Eddie was a true Gentlyman among many. I knew him when I was Derwent. I wish I got this news earlier, only got this today. It really saddens me as I only spoke to him only a month ago. He was so young only year younger than myself.

I knew Eddie in Cerberus. Not many would know this but Eddie had a hole in his foreskin and I can remember one night we padlocked him to the underside of his bunk in Rankin block ....heheheh...only for a little while though.

DALE "Ralph" THWAITES

ex Kellick Chippy originally from W.A. who served in Melbourne in 1974 and Nirimba 1983 ish ....among other postings.

Ralph passed away about 4 years ago now in a diving mishap off the coast of Edithburgh in South Australia.

Left behing 4 young kiddies and a beautifaul wife.

RIP mate.

Thanks for that info Gary. I did know of fast eddies hole. You could not miss it especially when his bunk was opposite mine when I was on Derwent.

Also I knew Dale while i was on Melbourne as well, Vale Dale :tear:

The very sad news has come through tonight that a Sea King helicopter from the Kanimbla has crashed on Nias Island in Indonesia. Of the 11 on board, 9 have perished, and 2 have been medivacced back to Kanimbla's hospital ward in serious condition.

Just heard the news myself of the death of 9 Australians on board Kanimbla.

The sad reallity of all this, was the ship was on it's way home to Australia after being away from their families for a few months, when they were were sent to Indonesia.

RIP to them all and may God be with there families in this sad time.

Australia mourns the lose of our Defence Personal. It was a pity that these people were nearly home after 3 months away on Mercy Missions.

My heart goes out to the Crew and families of the dead. It is very hard to accept that the victims were doing their duties, but the hard reality is that they were.

Again Australia has sarcificed her best for a neighbour, who may not appear sadden by our lose.

Nine Australians die in Navy helicopter

Tragedy has struck Australia's relief effort on Nias, with a Navy helicopter crashing, killing nine personnel on board.
The chopper crashed Saturday afternoon while on approach to Amandraya village on the remote west coast of Nias.

The Sea King helicopter had been ferrying an emergency medical team from the Kanimbla to the village as part of relief efforts to outlying areas of Nias following a devastating earthquake on Monday.
The helicopter crashed on approach to land, Kanimbla captain Commander George McGuire told journalists who had been on board the Kanimbla for a media tour.
He said two on board the helicopter survived and were airlifted to the Kanimbla for emergency surgery by the ship's second helicopter, which landed with a medical team after seeing smoke from the crash site.
"They are in a serious condition with leg fractures and other injuries," Cmdr McGuire said.
"We believe the rest of the personnel died."
On board the chopper were five naval personnel as well as three from the Air Force and one member of the Army.
Seven of the dead were male and two were female.
The Kanimbla immediately scrambled its second helicopter to inspect the crash zone for a second time after Indonesian military authorities in the area suggested the other nine passengers on board may have survived.
But an hour later the 300 ship's crew members were informed that all nine had been killed, their bodies found in the wreckage by a team of paramedics and rescue personnel.
Cmdr McGuire immediately dispatched the Kanimbla to the rescue site and it was steaming around the southern tip of Nias to take up station near a river leading to the village where the chopper crashed.
"That location is a very remote location," he said, adding that the trip would take about six hours to steam to the site where the chopper, callsign "Shark 02", went down.
Shattered staff on the Kanimbla cried and bowed their heads in shock in the ship's mess room when Cmdr McGuire broke the news that no other survivors had been found.
In the ship's cavernous hold, which had been converted into an emergency hospital ward, about 20 military doctors were caring for the two wounded crew members, conducting on-the-spot X-rays in preparation for surgery.
The Navy confirmed that all nine personnel killed in the crash were Australians.
Both pilots were killed and the two survivors were both male.
One had fractures and the other was believed to be in a very critical condition.
The Navy confirmed that those killed were the five naval personnel, three from the Air Force and one Army member.
Journalists on board the Kanimbla were barred from reporting news of the crash until all family members had been informed and the second helicopter on board Kanimbla had confirmed no more survivors.
The Kanimbla had only just reached the area on Saturday morning after steaming from Singapore, where crew had been enjoying shore leave after a three-month posting to Aceh.
The rescue mission was the second of the day and both helicopters earlier had returned from Peruk Dalam, on the south of the island, where they had airlifted four Indonesians to the ship for emergency care.
The Kanimbla has a fully equipped operating theatre with two doctors and two anaesthetists who had been operating through the afternoon and night and were fighting to save the life of their critically injured crewmate.

It brings to reality just how dangerous our duties are being members of the military. We tend to take our safety for granted because of all the training we did and the high adventure of it all.

They served their country well did their families and country proud.
