Today is the anniversary of the sinking of HMAS Perth along with the cruiser USS Houston, in the Sunda Strait in 1942.
Spare a thought for the 353 of Perth's 680 crew were killed in the battle along with those USS Houston.
Lest we forget.

4 March 1942 HMAS Yarra sunk south of Java
Yarra was escorting a convoy of three ships from the fighting in the Netherlands East Indies to Java to Fremantle when they were attacked by three Japanese heavy cruisers and two destroyers. All four ships were sunk and only 13 of Yarra's 151 crew survived.
Lest we forget.

I receive the following sad news from PC Beard tonight...
Rick,
John Hendry contacted me this morning to say that Ken Stone passed away last night in Cairns.
He's waiting to hear from John Simmons for the funeral times and he is on his way there.
Sad news, all too many of these days. JH told me on the weekend that of the 27 in his intake that escaped from Nirimba, 9 have a lung disease of some sort.
Scary, considering the multitude of other things we seem to becoming afflicted with from the "pus".
Cheers,
PCB
We've been aware of Ken's condition for some time, and as yet another Chippy answers the call from that great Barrack Master in the sky, our sincere sympathy goes out to Ken's family...
Rest in peace Brother....
Too many, too young, too soon...

Ken's service was held this morning, and he was farewelled in fine style with uniformed sailors carrying his Ensign-draped casket. When he left the church, the cortege was preceded by a guard of honour of his Nirimba term peers.
A good service.

This tribute to Ken, written by Ex-MOBI (Chippy) CMDR Stan Sheldon, has been circulating via e-mail:
All,
It is with great sadness that I have to advise that I received a signal at work today notifying the funeral arrangements of the late Ken Stone. An extract from the signal is attached below. As you should be able to remember, Ken was one of the great MOBI characters at NIRIMBA in our time.
Ken has not been well for some time - I believe that he suffered from cancer.
Ken spent his later years at HMAS CAIRNS where he was responsible for the maintenance of all Minor War Vessels home ported at Cairns and Darwin. He was highly respected at all levels in the RAN for his high levels of energy he applied to his work and his engineering knowledge.
I was associated professionally with Ken for many years and found him to be one of most dedicated and professional officers that I ever served with. I had the pleasure to visit his home on several occasions and found him and his wife to be most gracious hosts.
The world is going to be a much sadder place without Ken Stone.
Stan (Sheldon)
