Seeing a few vets sitting in the Huey in contemplative silence is fulfilling too. One Pirie bloke who was a small boats sailor told me he was ferried out in a Huey with blood running out the door due to 2 Americans with GSW to the stomach on board.

I've had many discussions on this particular subject, mostly with other Vietnam Vets but a couple with civilians who tried to niggle me the wrong way.

With the army vets, it seemed that they all believed the media/university crap that the war had been lost. I made a point of pointing out that the primary reason we were there was to stop communism flourishing into the rest of south east asia. The waffle that we were helping a beleaguered SVN government fight off a northern aggressor was just that - waffle and spin. The reality was that there needed to be a battlefield and it happened to be there, if it had been left any longer the battlefield would have been Malaysia.

After they digested that point of view, I asked what had happened with communism after 1975, and they all agreed that it had failed, not gone any further, and had ultimately imploded.

I then said "Well, looks like we all achieved the objective, eh? I would call that a win, not a defeat."

It might be a little simplistic for a complicated war, but I think it gave them a different way to look at things and hopefully a better feeling about that part of their lives.

As for the civilians, both were females with university degrees in arts. One eventually came out as a lesbian who just hated every male and wanted to cause dramas, and the other I dumped a pitcher of ice cubes over her head at a family gathering. She is now a good friend, believe it or not. :lol1:

I have removed a few posts from this forum due to post #1 being on an argumentative course which will not be tolerated in this topic.

As the second and third posts were in answer to the above post, they therefore became redundant. My apologies to Rick and BC.

For those who were not involved in Vietnam and didn't cop the garbage that was slung at us who were, it would be difficult to understand that the subject is still extremely raw - even after 50 years.

Just finished watching a programme on ABC2 called "The Weather Underground" about a group of revolutionary individuals in the USA during the Vietnam War days of the 1960's and '70's. Very interesting programme and on the way of thinking back then by these (then) relatively young people and how they evolved. They were attempting to get the government of the day (Nixon), to pull out of Vietnam. Nixon just dug his heels in. However, this group did have the FBI on the hop, which was rather funny.

There was also some rather graphic footage of American soldier(s) killing women and children in Vietnam; the faces of some of the soldiers (which reminded me of "Apocalypse Now"), and of course, napalm bombing.
