I worked with two Vietnamese men. One I worked at the Central Office of the state agency I worked for. His son worked in the unit I worked for. Both had worked for the US government in Vietnam so they had to leave in April of '75. The father was taken out by helicopter. The son could not find his wife and missed the helicopter evacuation. He wasn't able to find his wife but was told by someone he knew, probably VC, that his name was on a list that the NVA had and to leave. He got on one of the last boats out.
Both of them hate Democrats for not keeping that promise. They also became US citizens and they do vote.

Fred
Hanoi Hannah, Every trip HMAS Sydney did to Vietnam broadcast that the glorious NVA had sunk her with total loss of life.
Got so we were never sure we were alive or just doing ghost runs in the end.

BATTLE OF CORAL-BALMORAL
The Battle of CORAL BALMORAL was Australia’s largest, longest, bloodiest and most costly battle of the Vietnam War. There were six major battles that were of equal or greater duration and intensity than the Battle of Long Tan and there were more Australian casualties than in the Battle of Long Tan.
The Battle of CORAL BALMORAL was against a numerically superior, aggressive and determined enemy of NVA Main Force Regular Units yet the Australian force inflicted heavy casualties on them.
On three occasions the Australian forces were over-run by massed enemy assaults.
The Battle of CORAL BALMORAL was never awarded a United States or South Vietnamese Unit Award for Gallantry, despite reports that the US Commander of IIFFV stated that the bravery demonstrated by the Australian force deserved a Unit Citation.
There has been no official recognition given to those individuals, sub-units and units involved in The Battle of CORAL-BALMORAL.
Foxtel have advertised that the documentary on the BATTLE of CORAL BALMORAL is being billed as their premiere feature for November.
It premiers on the History Channel at 7.00pm AEDT on 11/11/2016 .
The Battle of CORAL BALMORAL ranks with historically significant Australian military actions of the great ANZAC tradition but it is relatively unknown by the Australian public. Despite flawed intelligence, operational stuff-up’s and incompetent leadership by senior staff it was the diggers on the ground who displayed gallantry and heroism to prevail over the enemy. It is time that they were properly recognized.

WRT Coral/Balmoral I believe that they were firing fletchettes from the 105s at times (shells have steel arrows - acts like a shotgun and clears EVERYTHING in line of the blast....(undergrowth, everthing)....

Quite correct. Also known as canister. I used to ride with one of the survivors who lives in Townsville, and they were firing at ground elevation. A very close thing, he said.

Vietnam Veterans Day 15 August 2008 by libste Vietnam Veterans Day is commemorated on 18 August every year. The day was originally known as Long Tan Day, chosen to commemorate the men of D Company, 6RAR who fought in the battle of Long Tan in 1966. On that day, 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought a pitched battle against over 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops in a rubber plantation not far from the small village of Long Tan. The Australians prevailed, but only after fighting in torrential rain for four hours. They were nearly overrun, but were saved by a timely ammunition resupply, accurate artillery fire from the nearby Australian base, and the arrival of reinforcements by armoured personnel carrier. Eighteen Australians lost their lives and 24 were wounded, the largest number of casualties in one operation since the Australian task force had arrived a few months earlier. After the battle the bodies of 245 enemy soldiers were found, but there was evidence that many more bodies had been carried away. On the third anniversary of Long Tan, 18 August 1969, a cross was raised on the site of the battle by the men of 6RAR. Veterans from the battle gathered at the cross to commemorate the fallen, and the day was commemorated by them as Long Tan Day from then on. Over time, all Vietnam veterans adopted the day as one to commemorate those who served and died in Vietnam. In 1987, following the very successful Welcome Home parade for Vietnam veterans in Sydney, Prime Minister Bob Hawke announced that Long Tan Day would be known as Vietnam Veterans Day. Since then, it has been commemorated every year as the day on which the service of all those men and women who served in Vietnam is remembered. ................................................
