I wholeheartedly disagree with your comment about Bali Greg. You must have missed the memo about a 3rd world country. We found the people to be so friendly and giving. Bali is no different from the 'slum' areas in Australia.

Bali is no different from the 'slum' areas in Australia. I must admit I've never had any wish to see Bali either. It's never been on my radar, and dropped way down the list after my last stint in Darwin 92-97. The number of medevacs coming into Darwin from Bali was astounding, and as my wife was nursing in the ICU I got the full description of what had happened to the evacuees. The mishandling of them was absolutely dreadful with many of them in the latter stages of sepsis. Not for me, for sure. Then of course were the bombings..

It is not exactly a tropical paradise for sure and like you Chris it was never on my to-do-list. My daughter and her partner convinced us to go and have a look and we were not sorry we did. There are areas and places you definitely don't go to (just like here in Oz). I wouldn't want to live there but to visit was just fine.

The locals were saying the same about you Smiley - "we don't mind him visiting, but not staying full time"!!!

BC, there were rumours about a petition being raised in West Oz about getting Smiley exiled to some beach near Coffs Harbour.......... As to Bali, I guess it's each to their own, and I keep in mind that many of our Navy brethren have taken up residence in Thailand. Also not for me (I can't eat fish or shellfish or chili any more), but the people are just beautiful. I was going to make a very pertinent point about all this but I took too long and I forgot what it was.....
