Tafmo,

You keep mentioning the tufts of hair growing out of Ned's ears but you forget about the hair on the palms of his hands as well! :jerk:

Ned the local drink is either XXXX or Bundaberg Rum but I guess I could organise a bottle of Bacardi. We may need something like that next Friday night as we are planning our first night dive to Proud Mary commencing at dusk and lasting about 40mins. We'll be ascending in total darkness (except for torch light of course). With Mooloolaba weather being as it is we coould be winded out but fingers crossed! If it goes ahead it will certainly be a dive burned into my random access memory banks forever !!!!

Sounds like a great dive Matt, the old girl should look awesome in torch light. :finga: :supz:

Night diving reminds me of the course we did back in 1966. The Navy in it's wisdom decided it needed divers that could weld and oxy-cut under water, so they asked for volunteers from the Shipwright branch.

The course was for 6 months and apart from all the normal training we were trained in those areas of construction/demolition, including using a cox's bolt gun which fired a sharpened bolt through the steel hull of a ship, similar to a ramset gun only with a charge about ten times bigger. :prayer: :prayer:

As the course was so long, we had extensive training in all the basics including night diving. The Navy insisted that all divers be continually attached to the surface by either a rope or Hooker hose, with an attendant watching the bubbles and directing the diver by prearranged signals. :goodman:

This brings me to a humorous incident that occurred one night at HMAS Rushcutter. In the night diving training area there were two large pylons about 3 feet apart and very close to a concrete retaining wall, with lots of thick kelp. You can probably guess what happened, the attendant who was one of our guys, directed the diver, who was also one of our guys, in between the posts, with his head up against the retaining wall. Then...signal to go right...wait a minute...signal to go left...wait a minute...signal to go forward...no more signals. :pottytrain2: :knob:

After about 5 minutes later the diver sticks his head out of the water, screaming, where in the fu**king hell do you expect me to go. Well this broke the whole course up, we laughed about it for months. :laughing5:

Ned
If you do a dive and the door has not been welded you might be able to go into the chippies workshop for the first time. You had better not try for the Chiefs mess - you might fall asleep.

Mooloolaba winter winds have arrived just in time to cause the cancellation of the planned first night dive tonight. We will try again next week. We did manage to dive on Wednesday morning with the winds at 12 knots SW we headed out in 1 to 2 metres swell. The dive once again was excellent but this time visibility was down to 8 metres and 'The Fighting 41' really turned it on as far as the rush of water through her with each passing swell. One of our guest divers, an experienced wreck diver, was swimming outside the ship passing one of the newly cut access hatches when 'Proud Mary' took a breath in and the ensuing current through the hatch meant that Robyn found herself inside the ship instead. Another diver was caught momentarily by the surge and held against the hatches on the side of the funnel until the current reversed and let her go. There certainly are no dull moments on this ship..............Another question for the resident historians and purveyors of tall tales.......What is the origin and history of the hand drawn mural.

Matt there are no purveyors of tall tales on this site; we all tell the absolute truth - as best we can recall it. :finga:

Hand drawn mural???? You found Ned's bunk with the stick figures drawn in texta? #-o #-o It wasn't Sidney Nolan, believe me. :-k
