Having looked at the pic again Rick, it is definitely not a 5" gunmount, too small and the Otto Melara 76mm is correct as I originally surmised.
In respect to an earlier remark, I think by you Rick about removing the aft gunmount to make way for the Tartar. The DDGs always had an after gunmount and Tartar missile mounting. The USN may have had another class of ship similar to the DDG that had an additional 5" gunmount instead of Tartar giving it three 5" guns. My old memory can recall seeing a picture of such a ship but it was back in the 60/70s.
Anyway we digress from the forum title.
Cheers,
Norm

[and the Chippies are all fast asleep in the Chippies Workshop, having been unable to figure out how to open the hatch from the inside the night before...... ]
Thank good there isn't a chippies workshop on a FFG, the only workshopon board is below deckand its the Engineers and they have to share, and its just across the passage from the Central Control Station and next door to the electrical workshop. The only advantage is that the Engineers workshop is Air Conditioned.
There a lathe, drill press and ultra sonic cleaner, a welder. some oxy gear. no room for wood or other rabbit making supplies.

Bruce D wrote: Norm, the class before the DDG's was the FORREST SHERMAN Class, the same hull as a DDG but with two turrets aft.
Thanks Bruce, I knew I had seen the pics before and stories from the Turner Joy was used in the classroom when I was doing my 5" gun course in 1972. From memory they had a mounting blow up in Vietnam when trying to clear a misfire.
I also find it intriguing how the gunmount at the stern works as the 5" requires two decks below it and the deck below that mount should be the after seamen's messdeck and I think below that was naval stores, can't imagine a full 5" gun magazine fitting in there.
Anyone shed some light, especially old gun busters.
Norm
